What is prototype? Yongli

May 23, 2023

If you are starting a project about develop new items, then make a prototype would be a necessary step to see the items before you put it into manufacturing.

Before you get a prototype made, you need to have a clear design of your product and protect your intellectual property. You can create a virtual product prototype using tools like CAD or slides, or a physical prototype using materials like paper, plastic, or metal. You can also hire a professional designer or prototyping service to help you create your prototype.

Some of the steps you need to take before you get a prototype made are:

· Protect your intellectual property:

You can apply for a patent, trademark, or copyright to prevent others from copying or stealing your product idea. You can also use

non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) to protect your confidential information when working with designers or manufacturers.

· Create a virtual product prototype:

You can use digital tools like CAD, PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Canva to create a visual representation of your product. This can help you refine your design, communicate your idea, and test it with users.

· Build your physical prototype:

You can use materials like paper, cardboard, clay, foam, plastic, or metal to create a tangible model of your product. You can also use tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, or CNC machines to create more accurate and detailed prototypes. Alternatively, you can outsource the prototyping process to a professional service that can handle the fabrication and assembly for you.

· Evaluate costs:

You need to estimate how much it will cost to produce and sell your product. You need to consider factors like materials, labor, packaging, shipping, marketing, and taxes. You also need to determine how much profit margin you want to make and how much customers are willing to pay for your product.

· Get feedback:

You need to test your prototype with potential customers and get their feedback on the design, functionality, usability, and value of your product. You can use methods like surveys, interviews, focus groups, or usability testing to collect feedback. You can also use tools like Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, UserTesting, or Hotjar to conduct online feedback sessions.

· Test and refine your prototype:

Based on the feedback you receive, you need to make improvements and changes to your prototype until it meets the customer needs and expectations. You may need to go through several iterations of prototyping and testing before you reach the final version of your product.

What's the function of the prototype?

· (1) Check the appearance design

The prototype is not only visible, but also touchable. It can intuitively reflect the designer’s creativity in the form of physical objects, avoiding the drawback of “looking good but not looking good”. Therefore, prototype making is indispensable in the process of new product development and product appearance deliberation.

·  (2) Check the structure design

Because the prototype is assembleable, it can intuitively reflect whether the structure is reasonable or not, and the difficulty of installation. It is convenient to find and solve problems as soon as possible.

· (3) Avoid the risk of direct mold opening

Because the cost of mold making is generally high, a larger mold is worth tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands. If structural problems or other problems are found in the process of mold opening, the loss can be imagined. And prototype making can avoid this loss and reduce mold opening risk.

· (4) Make the product launch time greatly advanced

Because of the advanced nature of prototype making, you can use the prototype for product promotion, and even early sales, production preparation work before the mold development, and occupy the market as soon as possible.
